Day 01: MAKASSAR – TANA TORAJA

Upon arrival at Sultan Hasanuddin Airport, Makassar, (formerly named Ujung Pandang, the largest city, communication and business centre in eastern Indonesia) you will meet our guide and depart to Tana Toraja – the regency of South Sulawesi and home of Toraja ethnic group people. One of the world’s most strangely formed island, Sulawesi (formerly known as Celebes) is the island of contrasts. Rugged mountains, virgin rainforests, lush paddy fields, highland lakes and perfect beaches, rich coral reefs, the island’s dramatic geographical features share a fabulous tropical setting with an amazing variety of flora and fauna. Sulawesi is the world's eleventh-largest island, covering an area of 174,600 km2. The highlight of South Sulawesi is, except striking landscapes, remarkable people; this part of the island is home to four major ethnic groups and several minor ones. The costal and lowland regions of South Sulawesi are occupied mainly by Bugis, great seafarers and shipbuilders; other groups, as Makassarese and Mandarese are closely related to the Bugis. In the northern part of peninsula is a region inhabited by people collectively known as Toraja. The route from Makassar to Tana Toraja offers superb views of rice fields, mountain hills and valleys. You will stop at Bugis village with typical houses built on stilts. Present-day Bugis earn their living as rice farmers, traders or fishermen. They are known as great seafarers and shipbuilders, trading throughout the Indonesian archipelago. Tana Toraja is one of most beautiful regions of Indonesia because of distinctive cultural exceptionality, extremely gorgeous scenery, funeral ceremonies, old traditions, traditional carvings and craftsmanship. The Toraja have unique culture based on strong animistic beliefs, they practice an ancestor cult where death and afterlife ceremonies are great feasts. A strict hierarchy is followed in the villages and for an important figure, wedding and burial ceremonies, can take days to perform, when buffalos are sacrificed, the deceased's remains are placed in a coffin and interred in caves hollowed out in high cliffs. The mouth of the cave is guarded by lifelike statues, who diligently look out from a balcony at the families and friends they have left.

Day 02: TANA TORAJA

You will explore highlights of the region. Scattered among rice fields are several gravesites where rows of wooden effigies gaze from hanging balconies like guards of their stony graves. In Lemo you will see cliff graves where burial chambers are cut out of the rock and several balconies are filled with tau tau - effigies of the dead. You will see tree baby graves and next ancient cave graves at Londa. You will visit one of the region’s oldest traditional villages Ke’te’ Kesu, famous for its wood carvings and paintings. Afterwards you will stop at Rantepao market full of handicraft and souvenir shops.

Meals included: breakfast

Day 03: TANA TORAJA

You will drive to Palawa, a village where you can find big and beautiful tongkonan - traditional Toraja houses. Toraja people usually live in small settlements; several extended families live in a series of tongkonan houses in each village, which are arranged in a circle around an open field. Tongkonan houses are built on stilts with the roof rearing up at either end, representing the prows of the first ship to arrive in the area with the Torajan's ancestors. The houses all face north and some say that this because it was from the north that the ancestors of the Toraja came. Afterwards drive to Batutumongga where you can view Rantepao and surrounding valleys. Then you will start walking through seldom visited small village compounds, coffee, cloves, bamboo plantations and rice fields (approximately 3 hours walk).

Meals included: breakfast

Day 04: TORAJA – MAKASSAR

Early morning drive back to Makassar to catch the flight to your next destination. On the way you will stop at Bambapuang to have a view over the “Erotic Mountain“.

Meals included: breakfast
